ELEMENTARY WRESTLING

Youth/Elementary Wrestling is a fun, exciting program for grades K through 6th. No experience is necessary and participants will wrestle against opponents of their own weight and ability. Wrestling will improve balance, hand-eye coordination, self-confidence and teaches teamwork. This is a great program, where participants learn wrestling techniques in a fun and safe atmosphere, while also building great friendships with fellow participants.

INFORMATION FOR FIRST YEAR PARENTS

Matches setup and format
Matches can be rather intimidating and confusing at first, but once you "know the drill" they're easy. When you first arrive, get a seat wherever you choose. We all kinda try to sit together, but as you will see in some "venues" you get whatever you can. Have your wrestler come down to the mats in their singlet, shoes and sweats (until they are warmed up). Once there, they should see a coach for their matches. The coach will write their match numbers on the back of their hand. Generally speaking they will have 2 or 3 matches. They will then warmup with the rest of the team. Once the matches begin, you will see either a master board with numbers under a mat number, or numbers at each mat. Usually at least four numbers are shown. When you see your child's number appear, have your child come down to the assigned mat and find a coach (if one is not already there). Feel free to direct your child down to the appropriate mat and help him or her find a coach. However, once a match has started parents must be off the mat (whether back in the stands or in a standing area). If you are videotaping, there is usually some space around the mat that you can safely tape from. When your child is done wrestling, have them put their t-shirts or sweatsuits back on to stay warm. IMPORTANT... please pay attention to the numbers on the board and have your child ready. If your child is not at the mat at their scheduled time, the match will be forfeited. Have them make bathroom trips before their number gets too close.
Matches can last up to four hours, but the good news is when your child is done, you can leave! If for any reason you and your child need to leave before their matches are complete (ie. they are sick), please let Coach Wolfe or another coach know before you go.
Things to bring to matches
  • For your child: wrestling shoes, singlet, headgear (optional), t-shirt, sweatpants, sweatshirt. NO JEANS. They should be in their singlet when they arrive.
  • Other good things to have: entertainment (iPod, book/magazines, videogames, etc.), water/gatorade, chapstick, snacks.
  • NOTE: As in any public "arena" please take precautions to guard your personal belongings. Though incidents have been few, there have been times items from headgear to iPods that have gone missing.
Important General Information
  • Plan on being at each match at least 35-40 minutes prior to start time to allow for proper warm-ups and to obtain your match information.
  • All wrestlers must attend one of their designated practices per week in order to wrestle at the upcoming league match and any dual meet.
  • Please let Coach Vaughn know on Thursday before a match if your wrestler will NOT be attending that match. should they become sick, please call as soon as possible to make any necessary changes to the match schedule.
  • your wrestler MUST wrestle in at least four of the five league meets to be eligible for the League Qualifier. Please see a coach if you have any questions.
